There are some traditional ways to let the wine breathe and these are well known about and documented. The most commonly recognized way to aerate wine is to simply remove the cork or the cap and leave the wine exposed to the air for a couple of hours. The problem is with this method is that it doesn’t work very well at all because so little of the wine is exposed to the air. The other issue is that if you forget about removing the cork, in advance, you have to drink it unaerated. Not that it matters much anyhow.

An aerator for wine negates the need to open up or decant the wine prior to consumption. The best ones are simply plugged into the neck of the bottle and the contents are poured through the device and the wine is aerated as it is poured. It works because there are small air inlets in the aerator and as the wine passes through the middle of the gadget, air is sucked into the inlets and is mixed with the wine flow. This has the effect of aerating the wine in real time, releasing those wonderful aromas and reducing many of those harsh compounds such as tannins that cause the wine to taste rough.

There are a whole load of various types and sizes of oxygenators available to select from. Small types can easily be packed away in a case or holdall and be taken away on business or holidays. There are aerators that come with a chilling rod attached to it which keeps the wine really cold. There are those that split the wine into different flows and add to the aeration.

As I said, the most preferred type is the attached type that sits in the bottle. They work very well which is the primary reason of their popularity. The other main benefit that they offer is that they allow your other hand free to hold the decanter or glass and you can aerate the wine even more by directing the flow of the wine onto the inside of the glass or carafe. They also have a splash guard that can prevent any spills that may occur.

There is another type of breather that is meant to be held in one hand while you pour the wine with the other hand, the unattached aerator. This means that you can’t direct the wine onto the inside of the glass though. A stand can be supplied with this type but then you are starting to shell out a few more dollars. They can also drip wine from them as  they have no splash guard.

Another unattached type actually sits onto the top of the decanter or glass. These type split the wine into separate streams and directs it onto the inside of the receptacle adding to the aeration. The problem is that they can also drip as you move them away from the glass.

Apart from the different styles of aerator, they come in different materials such as plastic, metal and glass. They all have different benefits such as the plastic ones can be taken away so they are tough and won’t break.

It’s up to you what you need it for, which one you opt for. Either way, you will find a wine aerator to be a great time saver and flavor enhancer.
